For all VANFASTIC repairs, the ideal cleaning agent is isopropyl alcohol, which can be used full strength or diluted 50% with water. VANFASTIC/FLEXAN will not bond to oily surfaces. Cleaning agents such as lacquer thinner or mineral spirits have an oil base. If these are used to remove tough stains, always finish with alcohol to remove any oily residue. All protrusions must be flattened out and the repair patch must be preformed to conform to the existing surface. Always leave extra room around the damaged area to ensure a complete seal.

The weakest part of the patch is the corners, crop the corners back about ½ " at a 45 degree angle to increase the bonding capability in these areas. Also, when cutting the patch, scissors or snips will raise one edge of the material, this raised edge must either be trimmed or flattened. To ensure complete adhesion, tap over a wooden block with a hammer around the edges and corners.

To impress rivets or any other protrusions, modify a machinist’s hammer with a rubber crutch tip of the appropriate size that is slipped over the striking surface. The ridges that are preformed in the rubber tip enable the rivet head to be worked into the patch perfectly. The rubber crutch tip can be purchased at most hardware stores for less than a dollar.

VANFASTIC may be joined to repair larger areas. In order to reinforce such large repairs however, it is necessary to use what we call a "bridge" system. This is accomplished by two methods. One method is to form a 90-degree angle on the side of one patch where the two sections will meet. Trim the formed area so that the angled portion fits into the void, the overlapping patch will then be joined to the original by overlapping the join over the angled section by at least two inches.

Butt joints for long gouges and tears are accomplished by cutting a four inch wide section that is first fitted to the area where the two patches will be joined, this should also have a 90 degree angle formed to fit within the depression of the gouge or tear. Place the joining section in such a position within the void that the repair material will completely cover the joining patch and also overlap at the top and bottom to provide a secure bond to the original surface.

Painting over uncoated aluminum requires complicated surface preparation so always paint over prepainted aluminum VANFASTIC in order to match an existing panel color. Use a caustic solution or sand lightly to dull the original finish and give the new paint "tooth" before refinishing.

Galvanic action or electrolysis is a reaction that takes place when dissimilar metals are joined or placed in close proximity to each other. The bonding agent used in VANFASTIC can be used in any of its forms to repair dissimilar metals and is especially useful in areas where dissimilar metals meet, such as steel bolts through aluminum panels or where the aluminum trailer skin meets the steel reinforced in the king pin area or at the rear doors sills and hinge areas.

FRP OR COMPOSITE PANELS. FRP panel damage that reveals the wooden core must be repaired immediately; any moisture that enters will swell the wood and cause the gel coat to eggshell. Both FLEXAN WHITE and aluminum VANFASTIC bond easily to fiberglass and will quickly seal and repair most frp or composite panels. Order FLEXAN WHITE (VF-1224W). VANFASTIC WHITE ALUMINUM (V12W SERIES) may be substituted.

REFRIGERATED TRAILERS. FLEXAN provides an airtight seal that contains the low pressure output of the refrigerator unit or nitrogen units if the trailer is so equipped. Use FLEXAN WHITE to seal and repair plastic liner damage. Order VF1224W.

REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS, many are now lined in stainless steel. Forklift or similar damage cannot be welded because of the insulating urethane liner. A stainless steel VANFASTIC repair is simply bonded in place in minutes without having to remove the liner. Order VSS1224.

ALUMINUM ROOF REPAIRS clean off the accumulation of oily diesel smoke with a commercial grade cleaner or use Easy off oven cleaner, then patch as you would on the sides. Order V1212N, V1224N OR V1248N. VANFASTIC VINYL is transparent and flexible. It seals and prevents leaks in the areas where the roof joins the rail. Order VV1224T.

STEEL CONTAINERS. The inside and the outside of steel containers are the same so that exterior damage is also interior damage. STEEL VANFASTIC applied to the outside provides a fast, permanent, good-looking repair for all types of containers without welding. It blends perfectly and is watertight and airtight. Order VS1224. COMPOSITE CONTAINERS. The ideal repair material is FLEXAN WHITE. If color refinish is required, substitute VANFASTIC ALUMINUM.

TRANSLUCENT ROOFS. FLEXAN TRANSLUCENT is the ideal repair material; the repair can be made from the inside or outside. For large repairs it may be necessary to apply to both sides. Use Easy Off to remove any accumulation of diesel smoke. Order VF1224T.

SOFT SIDE OR CURTAINSIDE TRAILERS. VINYL VANFASTIC repairs minor to medium rips or tears. The material is clear so that it may be applied over any color; larger repairs may require an application to both sides. Order VV1210C or for an even stronger repair with a matte finish that practically disappears, order VV1224M.

With the exception of VV1210C, all VANFASTIC and FLEXAN products are flame resistant and are approved for air cargo container repair purposes.
